IUB-Mikal Lynn Sousa Award for Excellence in Graduate Scholarship Fund

It is the intent of the Donors, and the Foundation agrees, that these gifts support a graduate award. The Award will be a minimum of $500 to a graduate student in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, with a strong preference for a woman but with no preference for area of study. Candidates may be nominated by any Indiana University faculty member or they may nominate themselves for the award in the application round immediately following the nomination to doctoral candidacy. If there is no qualified candidate in History and Philosophy of Science, similarly qualified students in the Department of History should be considered, again with a strong preference for a woman but with no preference for area of study. Extra consideration should be given to those nominees who demonstrate good citizenship, strong character, a history of public service, and are likely to be activists in their professional and extra-professional lives. Candidates who are otherwise qualified but do no exhibit these characteristics may be selected. These characteristics are more important to the Donors than grade point average and similar measures of academic achievement, as the Donors assume that any individual nominated for doctoral candidacy has demonstrated solid academic scholarship. The amount and recipient of the Award will be determined by the Fellowship Committee of the College.
