IUI-James W. Brown Scholarship (Liberal Arts)

James W. Brown is professor emeritus and executive associate dean emeritus of the IU School of Journalism, which has become the Department of Journalism and PR in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUI. The Department of Journalism and Public Relations launched the Jim Brown Interview Series in October 2021 in honor and appreciation of his dedication and service to journalism at IUI for 28 years.

Professor Emeritus Brown taught Introduction to Visual Communication and upper division courses that relate to visual communication and new media. During his years of teaching students, he was driven to help students become better at both verbal and visual communication. He was always fair in his dealings with students, and other people too.

Jim Brown received many awards and recognition over the years. In 2009 alone, Jim was named the Robin F. Garland teaching award recipient from the National Press Photographers Association; inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame; named Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Mitch Daniels, and the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation Better Newspaper Committee created the James W. Brown Innovation Award to honor innovation or initiation that seeks to reach new readers or audiences using any resources available in the newsroom. In 2008, Professor Brown received the Chancellor’s Faculty Award for Civic Engagement and Best Non-Fiction Book by the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists for Long Journey Home: Oral Histories of Contemporary Delaware Indians, edited by Professor Brown and Rita Kohn. The book includes 90 of Jim Brown’s photographs.

He retired from IUI in 2010 and continues to work on a documentary of Delaware Indians and a documentary of Operation Walk, a medical humanitarian medical mission. The Department of Journalism and Public Relations launched the Jim Brown Interview Series in October 2021 in honor and appreciation of Professor Emeritus Brown. The series features current students interviewing successful alumni with the goal of helping students and those watching the videos to learn from alumni and better understand the path to success.
