Christopher A. Bowden Memorial Scholarship for graduates of Lawerence North High School

In October 1994 IU student Christopher A. Bowden tragically died serving the country he loved so much. In the wake of this tragedy an endowment fund was established in Chris’ name.

He was kind, gentle, caring, sensitive, fun, and full of laughter. He made good grades at Lawrence North, and played soccer. He was a hard working individual who took pride in everything he did. And at the same time, he was the young man who at the age of 19 endured 20 weeks of 24 hour days in the woods of Georgia, the mountains of Dahlonega, the swamps of Florida, and the desert of Utah—all in the winter time in order to become an Army Ranger. He served in the United States Army as an Airborne Ranger and in the Indiana National Guard’s 151st infantry detachment, specializing in long range surveillance. He was a proud member of the IU student body and the Greek community attending all major IU events. In his four years as a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Chris left a major mark on each of his brothers. He served as the house manager for two semesters, participated in intramural events, and trained with the Little 500 cycling team. Chris also volunteered numerous hours to the American Red Cross blood drives and Habitat for Humanity.

He was an individual who made a major contribution to everything associated with his name, yet never expected recognition. Chris had an amazing ability to talk and work with people; his smile was enough to change the demeanor of an entire room. He wanted others to be happy and was willing to sacrifice his time to listen to someone’s problem or lend a helping hand. More than anything Chris loved his family and friends.
