IUIN-Sociology Service Learning Award (Liberal Arts)

This scholarship is to be used to support undergraduate students enrolled in degree ­granting programs of the Department of Sociology. All sociology major and minor students are eligible for the award.

The student should take at least one service learning course in Sociology and must be enrolled full time at IUI. The student should display outstanding achievement in service learning activities in terms of commitment, leadership and impact on others. The student is also expected to establish/maintain a relationship with a community partner or agency beyond the course. The recipient is strongly encouraged to participate in the Civic Engagement Showcase and Symposium by the Center for Service and Learning.

Nominated students will receive an email notification requesting additional information to be completed using the One.IU scholarship management system.

  1. Essay - Required
    This essay will be a minimum of ten (10) pages. The submission should focus on an important topic in Sociology, have a clear argument, and demonstrate your good sociological understanding of the concepts presented in at least one service learning course in Sociology. Your essay should depict outstanding achievement in service-learning activities in terms of commitment, leadership and impact on others. You are also expected to establish/maintain a relationship with a community partner or agency beyond the course(s) and fully explain the service/work/commitment being performed. If you participated in the Civic Engagement Showcase and Symposium by the Center for Service and Learning, this should also be included in the essay.
