IUSB-Freedom Summer

Freedom Summer Awards recognize and support IU South Bend undergraduate students who, seeking a deeper understanding of the importance and viability of personal commitment in a democratic society, choose to participate in one of the Freedom Summer study tour courses directed by the Civil Rights Heritage Center at IU South Bend (IUSB).

Supplemental Questions
  1. Will you be participating in the Freedom Summer program?
  2. Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you want to take the Freedom Summer class exploring the history of the civil rights movement, race relations and social justice in the South. You don’t need to have had a lifelong engagement with these issues, but it is helpful to know what sparked your curiosity. Also tell us how you think this trip might help you promote civil rights movement values such as equality, justice, understanding, peace, and unity in your community when you return.
  3. List the name of one person who knows you well (relatives should not be included) and who has agreed to submit a letter of reference.
  4. Are you an active participant in the IUSB Civil Rights Heritage Center?
  5. Describe your association with the Civil Rights Heritage Center and your participation in community service events sponsored by the Civil Rights Heritage Center.
