IUI-Alice Chandler Gockley and Gordon E. Gockley Memorial Scholarship (Liberal Arts)

This scholarship honors the memory of Alice Chandler Gockley and Gordon E. Gockley, both alumni of Indiana University. Alice earned her M.A. in History in 1955 and Gordon earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in German in 1954 and 1963. Alice was an avid lifelong reader and book collector and a former school librarian who placed a high value on education. Gordon was a man of arts and letters, a gourmet cook, lover of opera and Shakespeare, and a professor of German at Mott Community College in Flint, MI for more than 30 years. He was dedicated to student learning and believed his life was changed by the international study abroad experience he had during his undergraduate years.

The Alice Chandler Gockley and Gordon E. Gockley Memorial Scholarship supports undergraduate students for international study. The recipients must be enrolled in the School of Liberal Arts and will have been accepted to an accredited international stud program or enrolled in a Liberal Arts course that contains and international component that requires travel outside of the United States. The recipient should have demonstrated financial need, as determined by standard university measures.

Applicants will need to submit a faculty letter of recommendation, study abroad information flyer including description of program and costs, and write an essay about study abroad plans, interest in language/culture study, future education and career plans and the importance of the study abroad program to you Liberal Arts education. (maximum 500 words)
