IUIN-Myles and Peg Brand Fellowship in Bioethics (Liberal Arts)
This endowed fellowship may be awarded to a new or returning student in the Bioethics concentration of the Philosophy MA program in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IU Indianapolis. The fellowship award includes a $10,000 stipend from which health and dental insurance will be drawn, if needed. The purpose of the fellowship is to support a research project that concretely applies philosophical/ethical principles to real-life situations in the health care or biomedical research context. The project should connect the student with faculty and resources in one or all of the following: the Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research in the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, the IU Center for Bioethics, or the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IU Indianapolis.
Applicants should submit a 1-2 page proposal that outlines the bioethical problem the project will investigate, perhaps including a description of a case study in which this problem arises; the investigative methodology (literature review, case study analysis, data collection, interviews, etc.); how this project will contribute to the bioethics field and by what means the results will be disseminated (presentation at a professional conference, intra-institutional presentation, publication in a scholarly journal, white paper for a relevant organization, etc.).
The fellowship recipient will be required to meet the following expectations:
- Identify, in consultation with the graduate director of the Department of Philosophy, a faculty mentor for the research project;
- Design, with the faculty mentor, a set of required activities to complete the research project and a timeline for completion of specific benchmarks;
- Complete required activities and produce a scholarly paper, report, or presentation, as appropriate to the nature of the project;
