IUI-David C. Bell Theory Fellowship in Sociology (Liberal Arts)

It is the intent of the Donors, and the Foundation agrees, that income from this gift be used to support theory-based master’s or doctoral research fellowships for graduate students in the Department of Sociology in the School of Liberal Arts at IUI. Fellowship recipients shall be judged on the quality of their master’s or doctoral proposals by a committee of the Department graduate faculty. The number, amount(s, and recipient(s) of the Fellowship will be determined by the selection/awards committee of the School.

To be considered, applicants will submit:

  • The approved thesis proposal, including approval date and name of their thesis chairperson
  • A ‘personal statement’ submitted to a doctoral program
  • Evidence of application to a doctoral program in the social sciences
  • A curriculum vitae limited to two (2) pages that emphasizes any research accomplishments since being in the MA program

Eligible applicants must have a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 out of a 4.0 scale and must be enrolled in the Sociology Master’s Degree program at the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUI with at least 18 credit hours completed towards their MA degree. To receive this award, Sociology students must be making adequate progress towards their degree (e.g., no incomplete and all conditional acceptances met). Students must also have completed their thesis proposal requirements within the two (2) previous calendar years prior to the deadline and show evidence of a promising research career and anticipated doctoral study.

Additionally, applicants who demonstrate a strong understanding of social theory in their thesis proposal will receive higher consideration.

Students may only apply once. This fellowship is not renewable.
