IUI-Patrick McKeand Scholarship (Liberal Arts)

Patrick J. McKeand earned his B.A. from the IU School of Journalism in 1963. McKeand had been publisher of the Sagamore newspaper at IUI. Through his devotion, an endowed scholarship for future editors of The Sagamore was established by alumni. Patrick McKeand received the IUI Spirit of Philanthropy Award in 2004. He also taught at the School of Journalism for 11 years on the IUI campus. Students established this scholarship in his honor. As it was once known as the Patrick J. McKeand “Keep Your Nose to the Grindstone” Scholarship Award is given annually to an IUI journalism student.

The Patrick McKeand Scholarship continues to support undergraduate journalism students who serve as the editor(s)-in-chief of today’s IUI’s independent-run student media outlet, the Campus Citizen (or it successors). In the event that there is no editor-in-Chief, the scholarship will be made available to undergraduate students who have taken one or more of the Journalism and Public Relations Department’s practicum courses and made significant contributions to the Department’s publications.

Scholarship applicants will provide:

• List of professional (non-student) media-related positions you have held
• List of college publication, broadcast, or other media experience you have held
• Which journalism instructor or faculty members best know your work and in which class(es) did you have this instructor?

Additionally, applicants will submit an essay in 250 words or less that explain your goals and ambitions, what you hope to gain through your college degree, and where do you hope to be in the next five to ten to twenty years?
