IUI-Peter Bassett Barlow Prize (Liberal Arts)

The Peter Bassett Barlow Prize honors the memory of a man whose short life bore witness to the truth that there is no good destination to which the study of literature cannot lead. An English major at Harvard, where he earned the A.B. degree with Honors, might well had lead him to become a professional teacher and scholar. Instead, he chose to serve his community as a physician, to which calling he brought the skill of a devoted craftsman and the depth of a passionate humanist. The Peter Bassett Barlow Prize is given annually to the author of the best paper submitted by a student enrolled in the English MA Program in the School of Liberal Arts at IUI.

Submissions must have been written for course work in the TESOL or English MA program and be 12-15 pages in length, excluding notes and bibliography. Students may submit up to two (2) papers for this award. Additionally, students may revise and edit their work before submitting it.
