IUB-Kimberly L. Geeslin Memorial Fellowship
The Kimberly L. Geeslin Memorial Fellowship funds graduate students studying Hispanic linguistics in the Department of Spanish at Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington. A renowned scholar specializing in research at the intersection of second language acquisition and sociolinguistics, “Kim,†as she was known by her students, was an unparalleled mentor whose balance of rigor and support guided the scholarly and professional development of numerous students. She was also a tireless advocate for scholars from underrepresented groups. This fellowship contributes to that legacy of research excellence, mentorship, and advocacy in her name.
The award is to be used in support of the student’s dissertation studies including, but not limited to, travel to a conference to present their work, equipment or consulting with data analysis, participant recruitment, etc. One fellow will be selected each year.
Eligibility
IUB Hispanic linguistics doctoral students who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply:
• The student has passed their PhD exams and is making good progress to degree
• Prioritization will be given to:
1. students completing research at the intersection of second language acquisition and sociolinguistics
2. students completing dissertations that build upon Kim’s scholarship
3. students who are currently in or have previously served in a leadership or mentoring role in the department, university, community, or field
To be considered for the award, students must submit the following:
1. A cover letter explaining how the student meets the eligibility
2. The name and email address of their Dissertation Director who will confirm the student is making good progress to degree
