IUSB-The Bender Scholars Program UGRD
This award will be given to support undergraduate students and an annual faculty scholar(s) in residence. The scholarship(s) will be awarded to a distinguished multidisciplinary student or students, enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) with a major in the sciences or humanities and a demonstrated record and continuing involvement in community service; with a record of leadership on campus; and with a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. In selecting recipients, only juniors or seniors will be considered. Recipients in the junior year are eligible to reapply during their senior year. Recipients must be full time students enrolled in 12 credits or more each semester of the academic year while holding the scholarship. The number, amount of financial award, and recipients of the scholarship will be determined by the Bender Student Scholarship Committee of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, chaired by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and populated by faculty from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. The number and composition of the committee will be determined by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Application for the scholarship will include a personal essay written by the student describing the student’s life experience and the transformational nature of her or his multidisciplinary college experience. Other application materials may be required by the Scholarship Committee. The scholarship recipient(s) will be expected to participate in and support the Bender Scholar in Residence described below as appropriate and determined by the Dean and committee in consultation with the scholar in residence. This could take form of duties such as providing logistical support for the scholar while on campus to a full mentoring relationship during a longer residency. The Bender Faculty Scholars in Residence Program will fund an annual faculty scholar or scholars in residence. A faculty scholar or scholars will be selected from around the world by the Bender Faculty Scholar in Residence Committee of five, chaired by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Other members will be four academic department chairs drawn from at least 3 different disciplines in the sciences and humanities in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Both families of disciplines will be represented on the committee. The program will fund a multidisciplinary scholar or scholars whose expertise represents one of the disciplines housed in the humanities or the sciences. All Bender Faculty Scholars in Residence will have demonstrated a multidisciplinary perspective on their life work. Serious effort will be made to alternate (annually) the Bender Scholar in Residence’s areas of expertise between the humanities and the sciences. An outstanding scholar with a multidisciplinary interest is optimal. The duration of the visit may be as short as two days or as long as one academic year, to be determined by the committee and funds available. The activities of the scholar(s) will be determined by the Scholars Committee, but will include some interaction with the student scholarship recipient(s) and at least one public lecture, program, exhibit or other appropriate public event related to the scholar’s area of expertise. Some artifact of that event will be preserved and made available to the public. For example, a lecture may be published in a college publication or electronically, or an exhibit may be photographed and published by the college.
