IUB-Ray Cramer Scholarship

The Ray Cramer Scholarship supports undergraduate students who perform in the Wind Ensemble.

Students must continue participation in band ensembles.

Emeritus Professor Ray Cramer served as the Director of Bands at the Jacobs School beginning in 1982, conducted the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, and taught graduate conducting, band history, and wind literature classes during his tenure. Cramer received his undergraduate degree from Western Illinois University in 1962 and his master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1963. He holds Honorary Doctorates from his alma mater, Western Illinois University, and Vandercook College of Music. Prior to his teaching at IU, Cramer taught in public schools throughout Illinois, Iowa, and Ohio. He also served as the president of the Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra convention, and was the president of the American Bandmasters Association.

Cramer retired from IU in 2005, but continued his conducting career as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. Prior to his teaching at IU, Cramer taught in public schools throughout Illinois, Iowa, and Ohio. He serves as a regular guest conductor at the Musashino Academia of Music in Tokyo, Japan, and has performed with them at the Midwest Clinic in 1995 and 2006. Currently, he and his wife reside in Colorado Springs, near the mountains, family, and grandchildren.
